The much anticipated start to the English Premiership season has begun and after the first Weekend of games I think people will either be logging on or nipping down the street to put a bet on Chelsea reclaiming their Premiership title after an emphatic 4-0 victory over Portsmouth at Stamford Bridge. Goals from new boy Deco, Joe Cole, Frank Lampard and Nicolas Anelka sent out a very early warning that they mean business this year.
Manchester United struggled at Old Trafford in their first game against a well drilled Newcastle outfit and although they could have won it in the end a 1-1 draw was a well deserved point for the Magpies.
Arsenal and Liverpool both started their campaigns with 1-0 victories over West Bromwich Albion and Sunderland respectively. New boy Nasri opened the scoring in the fourth minute for Arsenal at the Emirates and despite dominating the game against a very defensive side they did not manage to score again. Liverpool had Spanish Star Fernando Torres to thank once again as he and new signing started their partnership up front looking very dangerous in their narrow victory over Roy Keane’s men at the Stadium of Light.
The other two new promoted sides (West Brom the other) had contrasting afternoons with Stoke losing 3-1 away at Bolton Wanderers but Hull City’s first ever game in the top flight of English football in their history ended like a dream come true with Caleb Folan scoring the winner in the 81st minute to give Hull a 2-1 victory over Fulham at their KC stadium.
