As my beloved Leeds United this week clinched a guaranteed play off place in League 1 at LadbrokesCom, I thought it would be fitting to explain in a little more detail just what the play-offs are, how they work and how they came about.

There are four top leagues in England, the Premiership, the Championship, League One and League Two, all but the Premiership have play-offs. There are automatic promotion places in the league which there are two of, apart from League 2 where we have three(but that’s another story) and the four teams who finish below the automatic promotion spaces then go into the Play-Offs.
The team who finishes 3rd will play the team in 6th and the team in 4th will play the team in 5th. They play each other twice, both home and away from home and then the two winners of the semi finals meet head to head in the final at the world famous Wembley Stadium and battle it out for promotion. Many people see this as an unfair way to gain promotion but at the same team it does generate a lot of money for the clubs involved and of course the FA, but more importantly it is a fantastic thing for neutral fans to be able to watch and bet on.
The Play- Offs were only introduced into the English game in the 1986/87 season and were not popular at first but are now seen as an integral part of the footballing calendar every season with sports betting at Ladbrokes.com on the rise. Good Luck Leeds United!!!
